October 7th
On October 7, 2023, the militant group Hamas launched a large-scale surprise attack from Gaza into southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 200 hostages, including civilians, children, and elderly people. Armed militants attacked homes, communities, military bases, and a music festival, with many reports of massacres, kidnappings, and other brutal acts against civilians. The attack became the deadliest single day in Israel’s history and triggered a major war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.
