About Ilan Ossendryver

Ilan Ossendryver is a Johannesburg-based photojournalist with over three decades of experience capturing defining moments in history.

His work began during South Africa’s Apartheid era, where he documented life under Apartheid leading to  the historic release of Nelson Mandela.  He photographed one of the first family photos of Nelson Mandela on his release in Soweto. That image that remain part of the visual memory of a nation.


Ilan has covered major international events, including the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, The October 7th atrocities by Hamas, the 12 Day war with Iran, the Gulf War, the war in Lebanon, the Israeli–Jordanian peace agreement, and the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. Ilan has documented life in South Africa and Israel during Covid-19 He documented the two Ethiopian airlifts, Operation Moses and Operation Solomon.

His assignments have taken him to the highest levels of global diplomacy, including photographing at President Hosni Mubarak’s palace in Cairo during the first meeting between Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat.

 

He has captured some of the world’s most influential figures—three U.S. Presidents, seven Israeli prime ministers, and icons such as Nelson Mandela, Luciano Pavarotti, Leonard Bernstein, and Mikhail Gorbachev Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Carlos Santana, Isaac Stern, Boris Spassky and many others.
 

Alongside his editorial work, Ilan has built a strong reputation in corporate and commercial photography, working with global brands including Microsoft, Nasdaq, Hilton Hotels, Southern Sun, Intel, and Boeing.

His photographs have been published worldwide in leading newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, Forbes, Der Spiegel, The Times (London), The Jerusalem Post, Haaretz, and The Star. His wildlife work has also featured in Africa Geographic, GO Magazine, and SA Birds & Birding.

Ilan previously worked as the resident photographer for the San Francisco Chronicle in Israel.
He is currently the resident photographer for the South African Jewish Report in Johannesburg.

 

Today, Ilan uses photography not only to document—but to make a difference. His ongoing work in communities such as Kliptown, Soweto reflects his commitment to storytelling as a force for awareness, dignity, and change.
