Friday
nights in Jerusalem used to be war. I remember the outskirts of Mea Shearim,
where the Haredi Jews would throw rocks and bottles at people desecrating
the Sabbath, and the police would fire back with teargas.
Today,
the center of the fight is Jerusalem's Rechov Bar Ilan. The religious
vs the non-religious. The battle still goes on between those who want
the Sabbath to be observed by everyone according to strict Jewish law
and those who want to spend the Sabbath as they wish, free from religious
interference. |
