My first Yom Kippur in Jerusalem. I came in from Arad and I hadn't yet settled in to get ready for the fast. In fact I still hadn't a place to stay that night. About twenty minutes before the fast, I was hungry, so I asked a young girl who was sweeping the floor, if I could have a glass of water. Without saying a word, she gave me a glass plus a chocolate brownie. I thanked her.
When I came back to Jerusalem over Succoth, I brought her flowers to thank her. Her mother shouted to her from upstairs to show me the Succah.
The boy in the above photograph, her brother, took me up to the roof to show me the Succah. I decided to take his picture.
When I came back the following week to show them the picture, a loud voice boomed from upstairs.. "IT IS FORBIDDEN TO TAKE PICTURES OF MY SON!!!"
Good thing I didn't buy flowers that time..
