Community
Empowerment Advances
Beit Shemesh
IAEJ Community Workers have continued meeting with the
two Ethiopian-led organizations in Beit Shemesh. Separate
meetings were held with the Directors of each organization
in an attempt to build a framework for these organizations
to pool their efforts.
While some progress has been made the problem has not
been resolved. Therefore, IAEJ Community Workers will
meet again with each organization separately before arranging
a joint meeting for all members of both organizations
to voice their opinions on the situation within the community,
and the ways to resolve their conflicts.
IAEJ's intention is to assist in the creation of an
environment in which their community's leaders will
unite to form a more powerful voice. To achieve this
we must work together with local activists to effectively
resolve existing conflicts, create clear plans of action,
and provide assistance in developing services offered
to the community.
Ashdod
The group of young activists, first responsible
for exposing the situation at Semach Bet School, recently
contacted IAEJ requesting our assistance in providing
them with effective advocacy tools. The group is made
up of approximately 18 young adults between the ages
of 16-17. After meeting with the group and assessing
their needs, IAEJ is proud to have the activists in
Ashdod participating in our Community Empowerment Project.
On September 24, IAEJ organized a full-day seminar for
the youth. The professionally led seminar addressed
methods for handling the media. The specific topics
were effective interviewing skills, and the differences
between radio and television. Each of the participants
was given an opportunity to perform a mock interview
on video and view the results. The session was interactive
and very informative.
IAEJ's Community Worker meets weekly with this group
of young activists to help in: the production and distribution
of a small newspaper highlighting the issues of the
local Ethiopian community. These young activists are
eager to discover stories in their neighborhood whose
resolution can be assisted through their dissemination
via this paper. IAEJ continues to mentor these youth,
assisting them as their projects develop
